Millennial remix: Fashion and Technology

I recently checked out the Inside Generation Style Fashion Show …. And it’s proof that the fashion industry is democratizing and recognizing the power of Millennial fashion bloggers. Sponsored by Intel and the Independent Fashion Bloggers (@_IFB), the evening was billed as a celebration of “the entrepreneurial spirit and individual style of bloggers.” The night stood out to me because it was not a traditional fashion show; there were no super models walking down the runway but rather, some of IFB’s top millennial fashion bloggers. This reflects the power that young, digitally savvy Millennials now have in the industry – they don’t solely report on what’s hot, but their blogs are just as much of a representation of their own personal style and unique viewpoint.

Blogging is a particularly hot career or “side-hustle” (job on the side) for creative Millennials. MTV research shows that 71% of Millennials think they are too talented to sit a cubicle; instead, they aspire to start their own business… and these fashion bloggers are a perfect example. Millennials fashion bloggers are embracing new tools and services to improve their own content and grow their social media obsessed audience, so their “side hustle” can quickly transform into a career. Communities like the IFB are one such example - the IFB platform is an online community where fashion bloggers can share experiences; promote their blogs and create resources that are mutually beneficial.

Millennials feel as if they are not being seen until they transform their inspiration into something others can admire, share and even remix. “Success” to this generation is growing and fulfilling their dreams – they want to be doing something that they love and pursue their passion. Fashion blogs today are just as much about the blogger as they are about fashion – they’ve evolved into stories about the bloggers’ lives. And that’s why bloggers now walk the runway.
